Clara E. Sipprell was a pictorialist photographer—a movement promoting photography as fine art rather than as simple documentation—who worked primarily in the first half of the 20th century. The Clara E. Sipprell Papers cover 1914 to 1975, with the bulk from the 1920s to 1930s. The collection consists of:

  • Correspondence: both personal and business to and from Sipprell, including with artist Arthur Wesley Dow, photographer Edward R. Dickson, Syracuse University, and others
  • Published materials: including exhibition materials, as well as magazine and newspaper articles about Sipprell or that feature Sipprell’s images in publications such as The New York Times, The Mentor, The House Beautiful, Town and Country, and Vermont Highways
  • Photographs: both personal and commercial albums, including two with articles, business cards, brochures, catalogs, invitations, and letters
  • Ephemera: including poems, exhibition labels, items from other artists like a signed reproduction of La Curieuse by Clarence H. White, and artifacts like a sign that hung outside Sipprell’s studio
